A healthy mouth has pale pink gums and bright white teeth. Red gum margins can be a sign of gum inflammation or gingivitis and is usually due to an unhealthy accumulation of plaque bacteria on the teeth. If left untreated, gingivitis will progress and can result in destruction of the tooth supporting structures and tooth loss. Dental disease is detrimental to a cat’s health and a cause of pain. Often cats show no outward signs and regular dental checks are advisable.
